Frequently Asked Questions

What is Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy?

Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP) is a form of treatment that combines the medicinal and psychedelic benefits of ketamine with the support and guidance of psychotherapy. Ketamine is a legal and safe medicine that provides non-ordinary states of consciousness. This alteration from one’s ordinary mind serves to catalyze the therapeutic process and bring forward content and experiences that may prove beneficial for healing. Ketamine also acts as an antidepressant and can provide relief from some mental health symptoms.

Do you offer other psychedelic therapies, like MDMA- or Psilocybin-assisted therapy?

No. Ketamine is the only psychedelic being used clinically at Boulder Wellness Ketamine Collective. While other medicines are available through clinical trials, we do not offer any of those services through our collective. We also do not provide referrals for underground providers. If you have additional inquires about legality and psychedelic medicine, you can find more information through the Psychedelic.Support Network.

Who is KAP for?

KAP is an alternative treatment option for individuals looking to heal from treatment-resistant depression, anxiety, trauma, addiction, or other mental health concerns. KAP is a safe and effective treatment option for individuals who have not seen success through classic forms of talk therapy or medication.

What does the treatment process look like?

Individuals who are interested in KAP will first complete a medical and psychological screen to ensure safety and appropriateness for treatment. Once deemed appropriate, individuals may participate in preparation sessions with a psychotherapist to set treatment goals and build skills for navigating the ketamine experience.

Individuals will then schedule a series of ketamine sessions. The exact amount and frequency of ketamine sessions varies based on clinical concerns and overall treatment plan. Because the efficacy of the medicine increases with cumulative doses, it is common for clients to be scheduled for multiple KAP sessions (6-8) over the course of four weeks.

Ketamine sessions are typically 2-3 hours and will include a psychotherapist and/or medical provider in the room. Ketamine is either self-administered as a sublingual lozenge, or administered by our medical staff via intramuscular injection. Integration support is provided at the end of each KAP session, and can also be scheduled individually as needed. Boulder Wellness Ketamine Collective offers a donation-based Integration Circle that runs weekly on Wednesday’s from 5:30-7:00pm. This is ideal for individuals who are looking to get additional support, or those in need of reduced fee options for integration.

Is it safe?

Ketamine is a safe, effective, and generally low-risk medicine. Ketamine is often said to “play well with others,” meaning there are few contraindications for treatment. Ketamine has minimal interactions with other medications and is quickly metabolized by the liver. Before beginning treatment, our team will provide a medical and psychological assessment to ensure the treatment is appropriate.

What will the experience be like?

Ketamine is classified as a dissociative medicine, meaning it will induce a feeling of detachment from one’s ordinary sense of reality and sense of self. While the direct experience of the medicine is unique for each individual, it can include shifts in emotional experience, heightened internal awareness, lowered defenses, increased sense of safety and connection, as well as closed-eye visual experiences. Our team is trained to support you with integrating each experience and finding value and meaning in the content that arises.

What is the cost?

The cost of treatment varies based on the clinical needs of each client. Initial medical evaluations will cost $350-400. Individuals who do preparation psychotherapy will generally pay the individual rate of the provider (typically $120-150/hr). Ketamine sessions range from $300-800 depending on providers, route of administration, and hours scheduled. All clients are required to have medical oversight of their first KAP session which can increase fee for the first session. Integration counseling is offered at the individual rate of the provider (typically $120-150/hr) and we offer a donation-based Integration Circle for anyone interested in reduced fee options.
